My work with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and UNESCO: Visit to Bangalore
UNESCO MGIEP launches ‘Embedding Education for Sustainable Development: A Guide for Textbook Authors
Press release and downloadable book
Currently, I serve as the United States Representative to UNESCO on a longitudinal project in partnership with Mahatma Gandhi Institute as a research associate and author, to develop a textbook for textbook authors about Textbooks for Sustainable Development: A Guide to Embedding ’in India. Last summer of 2016, I travelled to Bangalore, India where I met with 22 scholars from different disciplines across the world (e.g., Japan, Germany, Samoa, Italy, India, Bali, the U.K., Singapore, Cyprus, Indonesia, The U.S., Norway, Spain, Haiti, China, Nepal, Australia, South Africa, and Canada). My team outlined and mapped out the language chapter for the book while other groups focused on geography, maths, science, art, and history. Over the year, we wrote virtually and met on-line and the group just completed writing the book that textbook authors will now use to write curriculum for teachers and administrators across India. As a result of my participation, my Queer Literacy Framework will be implemented in classrooms across the world. Our next step will be to travel to Asia and do professional development with the groups that adopt the work about how to put this work into practice.
